5 WAYS FILIPINOS CAN RELATE TO “FROM PRADA TO NADA”

Romantic-comedy film “From Prada to Nada” may sound like a cheesy chick flick, but since it’s immersed in Mexican culture, it actually is relatable to us Filipinos.

The film “From Prada to Nada” stars Alexa PenaVega and Camilla Belle, who play spoiled sisters Mary and Nora. They are left penniless after their father’s sudden death and are forced to move in with their estranged aunt in East Los Angeles.

Here are five ways us Filipinos relate to the hilarious family in “From Prada to Nada:”

1. THE SIBLING DYNAMIC

Siblings always squabble. This is also the case of Mary and Nora who aren’t exactly similar in terms of personality. One is a shopaholic while the other is a law student, they ought to clash from time to time. At the beginning of the movie, Mary even crashes into Nora’s car — and then blames her sister for it. Haven’t we all had one of those moments with our siblings?

2. THAT “MAARTE” ONE IN THE FAMILY

Just like Nora, we all have a “maarte” sister. Well she may not exactly be your sister—maybe a cousin or a young aunt—but during family gatherings, you always spot her reapplying lipstick or taking photos of herself. She also either seems to be happily in love or wrecked with boy trouble—there is no in between. But whether she’s happy or not, you know you could always count on her to help you get ready for your family pictorial.

3. THE FAMILY MAKING A FUSS WHEN A FRIEND OF THE OPPOSITE SEX COMES OVER

It usually starts like this:

Ma, dadaan po si *insert name*, susunduin ako.”

Sino ‘yun?”

Boyfriend mo ba ‘yun?”

Next thing you know, your friend is sweating like a pig while your relatives and neighbors drill him with questions.

4. RELYING ON ALCOHOL AFTER A LOVE LIFE CRISIS

One word: “Tagay.

Even already drunk Nora wanted more booze and shared a bottle with her bad-boy neighbor Bruno.

Expect drunk bawling after.

5. ALWAYS COMING BACK TO FAMILY

No family is perfect, but no matter what happens, you know you will always have a home. No matter how many spats you have, you will always have arms to run into.
