Quezon City, Philippines, August 14, 2012— After a widely accepted initial run of the translated version of Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK) Classics, The Filipino Channel (TFC) now draws the curtain for memorable and award-winning episodes of the longest-running drama program, in English.

Starting August 4, MMK Classics presented the poignant tale of a woman who looks down upon her mother for being a woman of color as a result of her ethnic lineage. Entitled “Basket,” the sub-titled episode starred Drama Princess Judy Ann Santos and character actress Caridad Sanchez. Judy Ann portrayed the role of a young lady who turns her back against her past and pursues a more promising future with a rich man. She later on realized painfully that the very reason for her ‘bright’ future is her ‘bleak’ past.

The episode earned the Catholic Mass Media Awards for Best Drama and the Kapisanan ng Broadkasters sa Pilipinas (KBP) Golden Dove Awards Best Drama Program in 2001. “Basket” also earned a slot as a finalist at the Magnolia Award for Best Film for TV during the 9th Shanghai Television Festival in China in 2002.

Meanwhile last August 11, much-talked about actress Gretchen Barretto starred in the episode dubbed “Salamin” which earned her first acting award for television. Gretchen in this episode portrayed a woman wanting of a better life. In her search, she joined the town mayor, leaving her husband in the process. Philip Salvador portrayed the government official who is enamored by Gretchen and leaves his wife behind as well, to be with the woman he loves.

On August 18, Gretchen returned in an equally memorable performance in the episode “Larawan” about a teacher who falls for men in uniform – one a soldier and the other, a priest.

Lastly on August 25, Roderick Paulate takes center stage with Caridad Sanchez once again portraying a woman with ethnic lineage in “Abo”. Roderick’s endearing performance earned him the first Asian TV Awards for Best Drama Performance By An Actor in 1996.
