Man behind U.P.’s famous ‘isaw’ on “My Puhunan”

 

For students of the University of the Philippines – Diliman (UP Diliman), life in the campus is not complete unless they have eaten at the “Isawan ni Mang Larry” of Lauro Condencido Jr. Get to know the story behind one of the most celebrated food places in the campus with Karen Davila this Tuesday (January 16) on “My Puhunan.”

 

A native of Albay, Larry started out as a janitor in Manila before seeing an opportunity to sell “isaw” or the grilled intestine of a chicken or pig. With just P40 as capital, he ventured into setting up his own “isaw” business in 1984, using a stroller to go around the Diliman campus of UP.

 

Making sure that everything is all-natural and organic, Mang Larry saw his “isaw” become a hit with the UP community. His stroller would be upgraded into a makeshift wooden pushcart then later on a motorcycle, and then his own stall in UP as his business grew. Customers also began to arrive from outside UP, prompting him to open branches in branches at FEU Diliman, Maginhawa Street, and Visayas Avenue where they also offer a host of other delicacies.

SIKAT NA ISAWAN SA U.P. TAMPOK SA “MY PUHUNAN”

 

Para sa mga taga-University of the Philippines Diliman, hindi magiging kumpleto ang buhay sa UP kapag hindi mo natikman ang isaw sa “Isawan ni Mang Larry” ni Lauro Condencido Jr. Alamin ang kwento sa likod ng isa sa mga kinagigiliwang kainan sa UP kasama si Karen Davila ngayong Martes (Enero 16) sa “My Puhunan.”

 

Tubong Albay si Mang Larry na nagsimula bilang janitor dito sa Maynila bago nakita ang oportunidad para sa malaking kita sa pagbebenta ng isaw gamit ang P40 na puhunan noong 1984. Inilako ni Larry sa isang stroller ang kanyang mga isaw sa U.P. Diliman at sinigurong walang kemikal at puro natural na sangkap ang kanyang mga produkto para mas balik-balikan.

 

Lumago ang kanyang isawan hanggat nagkaroon na siya ng sariling pwesto sa loob ng Unibersidad. Sa pagdami ng mga bumibili mula sa labas ng UP, nagbukas na rin siya ng mga branch sa FEU Diliman, Maginhawa Street, at food park sa Visayas Avenue, kung saan marami pa siyang binebenta bukod sa isaw.
