Thursday, October 5, 2017 – 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm | Cost: FREE*
David Brower Center | 2150 Allston Way, Berkeley, CA

The Seacology Prize is an international award given each year to an indigenous islander for exceptional achievement in preserving the environments and cultures of the world’s islands.

The prize highlights the heroic efforts of people who seldom receive any publicity – indigenous leaders who risk their own lives and well-being to help their community and preserve the biodiversity of their home.

One of the awardees tonight is Regina Paz L. Lopez is the Chairman of the Philippines’ biggest non-government organization, the ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc. She pioneered internationally acclaimed programs for child abuse prevention, environment protection and educational television.

She was instrumental in the reforestation of the La Mesa Nature reserve, a 2,700 hectare denuded forest located at the nation’s capital, the rehabilitation of the toxic Pasig River and the promotion of community-based ecotourism projects in a staunch effort to stop destructive mining activities around the country.

Lopez is a recipient of the United Nations Grand Award for Excellence for pioneering BANTAY BATA 163, the country’s first rescue hotline for child abuse reports. She is also the first Southeast Asian to be honored with a UNESCO Kalinga Award for her work in the promotion of science education.
