Twin horror “Goodnight Mommy” shocks Cinema One this Sunday

Goodnight Mommy on Cinema One

The multi-awarded 2014 Austrian psychological horror film “Goodnight Mommy” about twins in search of clues on their mother’s real identity airs on the Philippines’ leading cable channel Cinema One this Sunday (October 29).

The mind-blogging chiller is set in a modernist setting and tells the story of brothers Elias and Lukas who are agitated by their mother’s return from an unexplained plastic surgery procedure.

More than being weirded out by her swollen, bandaged appearance, the boys are more terrified by her changed, deranged behavior. After discovering a photo of their mother with a person who looks exactly like her, the boys wickedly test whether the person under the bandages is their true parent or a twisted impostor.

According to a review from Lenika Cruz published in theatlantic.com, the movie is a welcome treat. “Visually and tonally, it’s quite beautiful, a welcome break from the recycled, low-budget fare that’s recently been dominating the annual scary-movie menu.”

The psychological thriller garnered various wins and nominations from a total of 38 award-giving bodies such as the Austrian Film Award (2016), Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (2015), European Film Awards (2015), and the Venice Film Festival (2014). It was also Austria’s foreign language entry to the 88th Academy Awards.

Created by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, the film’s cast includes Susanne Wuest and brothers Elias and Lukas Schwarz, who were both nominated for Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA (2016).
